Success is all about Being Prepared!

    – Welcome to Business English as it is spoken by professionals in the workplace. Hi, my name is Chris and today’s show is an Elementary level show. Joining me in the studio is Christie.

    – Hi, Chris, how are you doing?

    – I am good, how are you?

    – Very good.

    – Just the two of us we are going to do a lesson on airlines. When you are going to the airport and you have to give them your bags before you get on the plane. So, this is called checking in. Just like when you go to a hotel at first. Checking in (x3).

    – So, our dialogue today is about our conversation between airlines staff, OK, and airlines such as American Airlines, United, Indouez, NorthWest, AirFrance, Alitalia. There is many-many different airlines. So, when you go to check-in, this is the conversation between the airlines check-in staff and the passenger. OK? Let’s listen.

    – Good morning, sir. Can I have your passport and ticket, please?

    – I have got them. Here you are.

    – Thank you. Would you prefer a window seat or an aisle seat?

    – I prefer a window seat, please.

    – Do you have any baggage?

    – Yes, I have this suitcase and I have this carry-on bag too.

    – All right, I will take the suitcase for your. OK, here is your passport and ticket and here is your boarding pass. Your seat is 32A by the window. Your flight is on time and boarding starts at 11.30 at gate 12. Have a nice flight!

    – Thank you, bye.

    – OK, great, good! You might notice at the end Christie had a lot of information, important information that she gave me. So, we will go through some of the key information in a minute, but normally, Christie, when you are at the airport, and they show you your boarding pass... Every time they do it I think both of us, we have flown a lot, but they show it to you like you are a little kid.

    – Exactly, and in fact, they usually go through and circle what the gate, your seat and everything. And they point you in the direction of the gate.

    – Yes, they point… So, you know, it is not as hard as it might seem. If you did not understand the dialogue, remember, you can listen again. But also, there is a lot of body language and other factors in this kind of conversation.

    – So, let us go through one in a time some of the features. So, when I arrived, Christie asked me for my ticket and my passport, so I gave her those. And then she asked me about where I wanted to seat. So, can you explain the seats?

    – Yes, and you do not always get to pick your seat. So, I asked you if you wanted a window seat or an aisle seat. Window seat is the seat right next to the window. And I think most people prefer this seat. The aisle seat is the one near the middle of the plane.

    – The middle of the plane. OK, so, beside where people can walk.

    – Exactly. And between those two seats sometimes you have a middle seat.

    – Middle seat. So, we have aisle, middle and window seat…

    – … on the large planes.

    – So, I must have been early to get to choose my seat, right? If you are late you have no choice probably.

    – So, you probably have to stay in a middle seat, right? Nobody likes the middle seat.

    – No, it is an awful seat, especially if both people on either side of you are sleeping.

    – Yeah, so, it depends on the size of the plane, the type of plane, there might be two seats together, three seats or four seats together. Unless you are lucky enough to fly business class, where sometimes you are all alone, sometimes.

    – Oh, it is great!

    – At least you have a big enough seat is does not matter much. OK, let us continue. Then, what do you do next? You have got your seat, you need to take care of the bags. That is what your checking-in, right?

    – Exactly, and a lot of times you have a carry-on bag you take with you.

    – So, you carry it on to the plane. And it is also a noun we use, it is a carryon. OK, so, an adjective and a noun, a carry-on bag. So, the types of bags we would carry on are smaller and very light.

    – So, basically, a carry-on bag needs to be small enough to fit in the overhead compartment.

    – Right, so, above the passengers in the plane you could put some bags up there, and some people put bags there too heavy and too big and nobody else has room.

    –Right.

    – So, you must be able to fit it up there or under your seat.

    – Exactly.

    – And sometimes they have a small place to test it when you check in or you go through security. So, there is carry-on bags and then there is larger bags like suitcases that you need to check, OK? So, the verb “to check your bags” is to give them to the check-in people, check-in staff. And then they take the bags and it goes on kind of a cart and then it goes to the plane. And you should not have to worry about it. Usually it goes to the correct plane. And then you pick it up later when you land

    – Hopefully, yes.

    – Yes, OK. Then we have the final bit of information, which is Christie gives me my boarding pass. So, what is that?

    – Right, because when you show up there either you have a paper ticket or you can have an e-ticket. And you go to the desk and you give them that ticket. And they give you the boarding pass.

    – OK, why do they give me a boarding pass? Why cannot I just take my ticket?

    – Because when you get the boarding pass, the boarding pass has all the specific information about where you are sitting, you know, which plane you are getting on, which gate, which you do not always know ahead of time, which gate.

    – So, yeah. The ticket usually does not have a gate on it and some information might change. So, if your plane is a little late then your boarding pass should have the up-to-date information.

    – Exactly.

    – So, right, so, let us go over again. It has got my seat number…

    – It has your seat number, it has your gate.

    – So, what is the gate?

    – Gate is where the plane is.

    – Yeah, so, like the door, where you leave the airport and enter the plane.

    – Exactly.

    – Or in some airports you leave the airport to get on a bus that takes you to the plane.

    – Exactly.

    – OK, so that is the gate. It [Крис имеет в виду boarding pass] has the gate number and then it has the boarding time.

    – Boarding time, oh, that is the most important thing.

    – So, what is this verb “to board”? We heard it in another lesson before about trains. So, it means the same thing here.

    – Right, you use this term for trains, planes…

    – Only those two, I think. And it means to get on the plane, right?

    – Right.

    – So, you board the plane at the boarding gate.

    – Exactly.

    – So, you have a boarding time. Usually a half an hour before the plane leaves.

    – Yes, you should always go early because something can always come up.

    – Right. So, Christie, help me review what are the steps to checking-in?

    – Basically, you come to the airport; you have your ticket and your passport or you have passport identification. You go to the check-in counter.

    – Counter?

    – Yes, they give you a boarding pass back that has all the information. Oh, and they ask you for you baggage, they ask if you have any baggage.

    – Bags to check.

    – Right. Or you are going to be carrying them on or would you like to check them in.

    – And also they will give me my seat number or they will ask what kind of seat I want.

    – They will ask you where you prefer to seat.

    – Right. All right, let us listen to the dialogue one more time, but more quickly

    – OK, great, good. Some very key useful information for getting on that plane. Christie, thanks for helping out today.

    – Hey, that was my pleasure.

    – That is all the time we have today. My name is Chris. And thank you for listening, see you next time!

Как выбрать самые хорошие места в самолете при регистрации в аэропорту?

    <р> What is Seat Pitch?
Seat Pitch is the distance from any point on one seat to the exact same point on the seat in front or behind it. While it is not the exact equivalent of "legroom", it does give a very good approximation of how much seat room you should expect. Bottom line: the more seat pitch the better.

If the airlines publish seat pitch or seat width information, it is listed on the website. Some airlines, however, do not publish these measurements, in which case they are most likely absent from the site. In this case, try calling the airline directly for additional information.

What if I am flying on an airline or aircraft not featured on SeatGuru.com?
Seat maps can often be found on the airline's website; if you cannot locate them an airline phone agent may be able to direct you to one. While these maps will not offer seat-by-seat commentary or color coding, they will provide a general seating layout. Another resource for seating and flight information is the FlyerTalk message boards: FlyerTalk Home Page and FlyerTalk Search Page.

It is important to note that different airlines almost always configure the interior of the same version of a plane differently. Using another airline's seat map will not always provide accurate information.

Our goal is to continue to improve this website and the number of fleets and aircraft detailed on SeatGuru.com will continue to grow.

Can I submit a comment about a seat on an aircraft or airline not featured on SeatGuru.com?
Please feel free to submit any information you have about an aircraft or airline not on SeatGuru.com. You can contact us via email at help@seatguru.com, and we will try to get the new information on the site as soon as possible.

    What is a power port?
A power port, usually located in the seat arm rest, enables you to plug in electronic devices such as laptops and portable DVD players while on the plane. If there is a power port location at your seat it will be noted by a black dot on the SeatGuru seating map; the Seat Map Key provides an illustration. The three widely used types of power ports are AC, Cigarette, and Empower. Both the Cigarette and Empower ports require special adapters which can be purchased from a number of retailers. If power ports are available on an aircraft there will be a laptop icon on that plane's web page on the SeatGuru site. If you click on the icon, detailed power information will appear.

What does it mean if a seat is colored Red for "Poor Seat"?
A seat colored red is meant to alert travelers that the seat should be avoided. Usually, it has multiple poor qualities, such as no window, limited recline or legroom, reduced seat width, etc. If you place your mouse over the seat in question, comments will appear to explain why it is a poor seat.

What does it mean if a seat is colored Yellow for "Be Aware"?
A seat colored yellow is meant to alert travelers that there is something different about the seat. Usually, the seat has one poor feature, such as no window, limited recline or legroom, reduced seat width, etc, but it does not have enough poor qualities to warrant being colored red. If you place your mouse over the seat in question, comments will appear to explain why it is a seat you should be wary of.

What does it mean if a seat is White or not colored?
A seat colored white is considered a standard seat for that particular aircraft. Use the pitch and width chart at the top of each airplane page because a standard seat on one plane may be different from a standard seat on another. Standard seats are usually preferable to yellow seats, and always preferable to red seats.

What does it mean if a seat is colored Half Yellow/Half Green?
If a seat is colored both yellow and green it means there are both positive aspects of the seat and aspects to be wary of. If you place your mouse over the seat in question, comments will appear to explain these pros and cons.

What does it mean if a seat is colored Half Yellow/Half Red?
If a seat is colored both yellow and red it means there are aspects to be wary of, but the seat is not as bad as the red seats on the aircraft. If you place your mouse over the seat in question, comments will appear to explain these pros and cons.

Can I print the seat maps from the website?
Yes, we are now a print friendly site! On each plane page you will see a "Print Page" icon that will provide you with a print-optimized version of the page.

I'm having technical difficulties with the site, what can I do?
For problems with the menu system, try using the site map which has a link to every plane on the site; it is located at the bottom of every page. This website takes advantage of new HTML and JavaScript techniques introduced over the last couple of years and you may be experiencing problems if you are using an older browser. While most people (over 99%) have newer browsers that can take advantage of these features, some cannot. We have personally tested SeatGuru on Internet Explorer 5.0+, Netscape 4.78+, Opera 5.0+, AOL 6.0+, and Mozilla 1.0+ and Safari. Ensuring that the website operates on so many browsers involved quite a bit of time, though we are sorry if it doesn't work with your particular setup. Most people have been able to correct viewing and function problems by upgrading their browsers, using a different browser all together, or finding an alternate computer to use. Also, the website looks best in a resolution of 1024x768 or greater, but is acceptable in 800x600.

How do I know what type of plane I'm flying?
Read our article, "How do I know what aircraft type I'm flying?" to help you figure out your aircraft type.

    What is a bulkhead seat?
We receive so many questions about bulkhead seats that we thought it would be helpful to provide a detailed look at these controversial airplane seats. Read our Bulkheads Explained article.

Can anyone sit in an Exit Row?
To sit in an Exit Row, the FAA requires that a passenger:
Be 15 years of age or older
    Have full mobility
Have the ability to understand and communicate instructions
Be physically able and willing to operate the emergency equipment if necessary.

Infants are not allowed to be seated in Exit Rows or the rows immediately in front of or in back of an Exit Row (even if accompanied by a passenger 15 years of age). If you plan on booking an Emergency Exit and are concerned that you or those you are traveling with do not meet the criteria, contact the airline you are flying for further information.

How do I submit seat comments?
On every aircraft, there is a "Submit Comments" button under the amenity icons, to the right of the plane. After clicking, a feedback form for seat comments will appear on your screen. This system allows us to collect all the comments for individual planes in one database.

If you have any information about an aircraft or airline not featured on SeatGuru.com, contact us via email at help@seatguru.com, and we will try to get the new information on the site as soon as possible.

    Can you change my seat?
No, SeatGuru.com has no affiliation with either the airlines, their reservation systems, or any travel agency. You should attempt to contact either your travel agent or the airline you are flying to inquire about seat changes.

How often is the site updated?
We aggregate, verify, and incorporate submitted feedback and comments into the site daily.

Is there a version of the site I can access from my Blackberry or PDA?
Yes, http://mobile.seatguru.com, a PDA-friendly version of the website was launched at the end of 2004. Learn more about this mobile service.

Can you answer my questions about traveling with a pet?
Yes, look for the "Pets" tab at the top of the General Information page for the airline you are flying. Each airline has a General Information page that can be reached from the left hand menu. Almost all airlines require you make advance reservations for your animal's travel; make sure you contact the airline directly.

Do you have information on designated handicap seating and seat belt extenders?
No, we recommend that you contact the airline you are flying with your questions and concerns.
