The purpose I have had in mind in writing this book has been to give an accurate picture of the neurotic person who lives among us, with the conflicts which actually move him, with his anxieties, his suffering and the many difficulties he has in his relations with others as well as with himself. I am not concerned here with any particular type or types of neuroses, but have concentrated on the character structure which recurs in nearly all neurotic persons of our time in one or another form.

Emphasis is put on the actually existing conflicts and the neurotic’s attempts to solve them, on his actually existing anxieties and the defenses he has built up against them. This emphasis on the actual situation does not mean that I discard the idea that essentially neuroses develop out of early childhood experiences. But I differ from many psychoanalytic writers in as much as I do not consider it justified to focus our attention on childhood in a sort of one-sided fascination and to consider later reactions essentially as repetitions of earlier ones. I want to show that the relation between childhood experiences and later conflicts is much more intricate than is assumed by those psychoanalysts who proclaim a simple cause and effect relationship. Though experiences in childhood provide determining conditions for neuroses they are nevertheless not the only cause of later difficulties.

When we focus our attention on the actual neurotic difficulties we recognize that neuroses are generated not only by incidental individual experiences, but also by the specific cultural conditions under which we live. In fact the cultural conditions not only lend weight and color to the individual experiences but in the last analysis determine their particular form. It is an individual fate, for example, to have a domineering or a "self-sacrificing" mother, but it is only under definite cultural conditions that we find domineering or self-sacrificing mothers, and it is also only because of these existing conditions that such an experience will have an influence on later life.

When we realize the great import of cultural conditions on neuroses the biological and physiological conditions, which are considered by Freud to be their root, recede into the background. The influence of these latter factors should be considered only on the basis of well established evidence.

This orientation of mine has led to some new interpretations for a number of basic problems in neuroses. Though these interpretations refer to disparate questions such as the problem of masochism, the implications of the neurotic need for affection, the meaning of neurotic guilt feelings, they all have a common basis in an emphasis on the determining role that anxiety plays in bringing about neurotic character trends.

Since many of my interpretations deviate from those of Freud some readers may ask whether this is still psychoanalysis. The answer depends on what one holds essential in psychoanalysis. If one believes that it is constituted entirely by the sum total of theories propounded by Freud, then what is presented here is not psychoanalysis. If, however, one believes that the essentials of psychoanalysis lie in certain basic trends of thought concerning the role of unconscious processes and the ways in which they find expression, and in a form of therapeutic treatment that brings these processes to awareness, then what I present is psychoanalysis. I believe that a strict adherence to all of Freud’s theoretical interpretations entails the danger of tending to find in neuroses what Freud’s theories lead one to expect to find. It is the danger of stagnation. I believe that deference for Freud’s gigantic achievements should show itself in building on the foundations that he has laid, and that in this way we can help to fulfill the possibilities which psychoanalysis has for the future, as a theory as well as a therapy.

These remarks answer also another possible question: whether my interpretation is somewhat Adlerian. There are some similarities with certain points that Adler has stressed, but fundamentally my interpretation rests on Freudian ground. Adler is in fact a good example of how even a productive insight into psychological processes can become sterile if pursued onesidedly and without foundation in the basic discoveries of Freud.

Since it has not been the main purpose of this book to define in what respects I agree or disagree with other psychoanalytic writers, I have on the whole limited my discussion of polemic points to certain questions on which my opinions conspicuously diverge from those of Freud.

What I have presented here are the impressions I have gained in long psychoanalytic study of neuroses. To present the material on which my interpretations are based I should have had to include many detailed case histories, a procedure which would have been unduly cumbersome in a book intended to give a general presentation of problems in neuroses. Even without this material, however, it is possible for the specialist and even for the layman to test the validity of my statements. If he is an attentive observer he can compare my assumptions with his own observations and experience, and on this basis reject or accept, modify or underscore what I have said.

The book is written in plain language, and for the sake of clarity I have refrained from discussing too many ramifications. Technical terms have been avoided as much as possible because there is always the danger of letting such terms substitute for clear thinking. Thus it may appear to many readers, particularly laymen, that the problems of the neurotic personality are easily understood. But this would be a mistaken and even a dangerous conclusion. We cannot escape the fact that all psychological problems are necessarily profoundly intricate and subtle. If there is anyone who is not willing to accept this fact he is warned not to read the book lest he find himself in a maze and be disappointed in his search for ready formulae.

The book is addressed to the interested layman as well as to those who have to deal professionally with neurotic persons and are familiar with the problems involved. Among these it is intended not only for psychiatrists but for social workers and teachers, and also for those groups of anthropologists and sociologists who have become aware of the significance of psychic factors in the study of different cultures. Finally, I hope it will have some significance for the neurotic himself. If he does not on principle refute any psychological thinking as an intrusion and an imposition he often has on the basis of his own suffering a keener and finer understanding of psychological intricacies than his more robust brothers. Unfortunately reading about his situation will not cure him; in what he reads he may recognize others much more readily than himself.

My main gratitude goes to Freud because he has provided us with the foundation and the tools to work with, and to my patients because whatever understanding I have has grown out of our work together.

Что такое ролевые игры, и как проходят разговорные уроки английского языка?

Сегодняшний урок я начну необычно - не с объяснения английской грамматики или разбора материала к предстоящему уроку, а с объяснения методики обучения через ролевые игры. Я хочу объяснить Вам, зачем мы проводим ролевые игры, какие механизмы нашей психики задействуются в ролевых играх на уроках английского языка, а также объясню, каких результатов следует ожидать от разговорной практики на английском языке в ходе обучения при помощи этого метода.

Изучение английского языка может показаться совершенно скучным и неинтересным занятием, если этот процесс протекает монотонно, включает один вид деятельности и никак не мотивирует обучаемого все- таки с интересом заниматься английским. Задача учителя – таким образом преподнести обучающий процесс, чтобы ученик захотел учить английский, стремился понимать его и был готов говорить на нем.

Одним из основных стимулов к обучению является игра. Ведь в комплексе с дискуссиями и дебатами игры, в частности, ролевые игры на уроках английского языка являются наиболее информативными и результативными методами обучения с точки зрения восприятия. В процессе игры ученик преодолевает свою скованность и тревожность.

Что представляет собой ролевая игра? Что мы обычно понимаем под ролевой игрой? Когда учащиеся принимают роль, то они разыгрывают ее в определенной ситуации. Группа учащихся, разыгрывающая роль в классе уподобляется группе детей, играющих в школу, больницу, звездные войны и т.д. И те, и другие бессознательно создают, творят свою собственную реальность и, делая это, оперируют своими знаниями реального мира, развивая свои способности взаимодействовать с другими людьми. В этой ситуации нет зрителей. В ситуации отсутствует риск коммуникации и поведения реального мира.

Деятельность доставляет удовольствие и не угрожает личности взрослого учащегося, так как такая игра в роль скорее укрепит нежели разрушит уверенность в себе.

Вторым преимуществом ролевой игры является то, что она дает возможность использовать неподготовленную речь. Основная цель любой ролевой игры - тренировка неподготовленной речи.

Каковы преимущества использования ролевой игры для изучения английского языка:

  • Посредством ролевой игры в классе могут быть привнесены разнообразные а)формы опыта; б) могут использоваться разнообразные функции, структуры, большой объем лексического материала. Ролевая игра может превзойти возможности любой парной и групповой деятельности, тренировать учащихся в умении говорить в любой ситуации на любую тему.
  • Ролевая игра ставит учащихся в ситуации в которых им требуется использовать и развивать такие языковые формы, которые необходимы как смазочный материал в работе социальных взаимоотношений, которыми так часто пренебрегают наши учителя.
  • Некоторые люди часто учат английский для того, чтобы подготовиться к определенной роли в жизни (работать за границей, путешествовать). Для них будет очень полезен тот языковый материал, который им понадобится во время поездки и очень важно, чтобы впервые они могли испробовать свои силы в дружеском окружении классной комнаты. Для них ролевая игра становится очень важной генеральной репетицией к реальной жизни.
  • Ролевая игра снабжает застенчивых, неуверенных в себе учащихся "маской" за которую они могут спрятаться. Учащиеся испытывают огромные затруднения, когда основной упор в обучении делается на личность обучающихся, на их непосредственный опыт. И в ролевой игре такие учащиеся получают обычно освобождение, поскольку их личность не затронута, им ненужно раскрываться.
  • Преимущество использования ролевой игры в том, что она доставляет удовольствие играющим в нее. Как только учащиеся начинают понимать, что именно от него требуется, они с удовольствием дают волю своему воображению. А поскольку это занятие им нравится, то учебный материал усваивается намного эффективнее.
  • Ролевая игра обладает целой гаммой технологий (коммуникативной технологией, которая развивает языковую беглость учащихся, способствует взаимодействию в классе и повышает мотивацию).

Процесс обучения состоит из нескольких фаз: фаза презентации; фаза полузнаний; фаза закрепления.

Ролевая игра принадлежит к категории технологии обучения языку, которую относят к технологии обучения с низким вводом и высоким выводом. Это означает, что сконцентрированная вокруг Учителя фаза презентации очень коротка. После короткого вступления учащиеся погружаются в деятельность в которой выполнение задания намного важнее, чем использование точных слов; деятельность, в которой беглость превалирует над аккуратностью. Естественно, что язык, который учащиеся используют в ролевой игре, а вернее языковый материал, должен быть введен на более ранних стадиях обучения.

Ролевая игра пригодна для каждого вида работы с языком (отработка структур, лексики, изучение функций, интонационных моделей), это также использование правильного слова в правильном месте и в правильное время.

Ролевые игры, которые обрабатываются, заучиваются и проигрываются для других учащихся - не являются больше ролевыми играми, а называются драматическими представлениями. Ролевая игра касается в основном процесса игры, а не готового продукта. Это должно быть уяснено с самого начала, поскольку многие учащиеся очень застенчивы и они робеют, когда их заставляют участвовать в спектакле. И, кроме того, они часто убеждены в том, что они не обладают талантом игры. В ролевой игре они не участвуют в спектакле, там нет публики. Даже учитель должен отойти на задний план, поскольку его присутствие может препятствовать - своей готовностью наброситься на ученика каждый раз, когда допускаются ошибки. Обучение наиболее эффективно в атмосфере, свободной от напряжения. Ролевая игра может быть показана другим или записана на пленку, но это не обязательно. Ролевая игра это изучение языка.

– Just the two of us we are going to do a lesson on airlines. When you are going to the airport and you have to give them your bags before you get on the plane. So, this is called checking in. Just like when you go to a hotel at first. Checking in (x3).

– So, our dialogue today is about our conversation between airlines staff, OK, and airlines such as American Airlines, United, Indouez, NorthWest, AirFrance, Alitalia. There is many-many different airlines. So, when you go to check-in, this is the conversation between the airlines check-in staff and the passenger. OK? Let’s listen.

– Good morning, sir. Can I have your passport and ticket, please?

– I have got them. Here you are.

– Thank you. Would you prefer a window seat or an aisle seat?

– I prefer a window seat, please.

– Do you have any baggage?

– Yes, I have this suitcase and I have this carry-on bag too.

– All right, I will take the suitcase for your. OK, here is your passport and ticket and here is your boarding pass. Your seat is 32A by the window. Your flight is on time and boarding starts at 11.30 at gate 12. Have a nice flight!

– OK, great, good! You might notice at the end Christie had a lot of information, important information that she gave me. So, we will go through some of the key information in a minute, but normally, Christie, when you are at the airport, and they show you your boarding pass... Every time they do it I think both of us, we have flown a lot, but they show it to you like you are a little kid.

– Exactly, and in fact, they usually go through and circle what the gate, your seat and everything. And they point you in the direction of the gate.

– Yes, they point… So, you know, it is not as hard as it might seem. If you did not understand the dialogue, remember, you can listen again. But also, there is a lot of body language and other factors in this kind of conversation.

– So, let us go through one in a time some of the features. So, when I arrived, Christie asked me for my ticket and my passport, so I gave her those. And then she asked me about where I wanted to seat. So, can you explain the seats?

And you should not have to worry about it. Usually it goes to the correct plane. And then you pick it up later when you land

– Hopefully, yes.

– Yes, OK. Then we have the final bit of information, which is Christie gives me my boarding pass. So, what is that?

– Right, because when you show up there either you have a paper ticket or you can have an e-ticket. And you go to the desk and you give them that ticket. And they give you the boarding pass.

– OK, why do they give me a boarding pass? Why cannot I just take my ticket?

– Because when you get the boarding pass, the boarding pass has all the specific information about where you are sitting, you know, which plane you are getting on, which gate, which you do not always know ahead of time, which gate.

– So, yeah. The ticket usually does not have a gate on it and some information might change. So, if your plane is a little late then your boarding pass should have the up-to-date information.

– Exactly.

– So, right, so, let us go over again. It has got my seat number…

– It has your seat number, it has your gate.

– So, what is the gate?

– Gate is where the plane is.

– Yeah, so, like the door, where you leave the airport and enter the plane.

– Exactly.

– Or in some airports you leave the airport to get on a bus that takes you to the plane.

– Exactly.

– Right. Or you are going to be carrying them on or would you like to check them in.

– And also they will give me my seat number or they will ask what kind of seat I want.

– They will ask you where you prefer to seat.

Seat Pitch is the distance from any point on one seat to the exact same point on the seat in front or behind it. While it is not the exact equivalent of "legroom", it does give a very good approximation of how much seat room you should expect. Bottom line: the more seat pitch the better.

What is a power port?
A power port, usually located in the seat arm rest, enables you to plug in electronic devices such as laptops and portable DVD players while on the plane. Can anyone sit in an Exit Row?
To sit in an Exit Row, the FAA requires that a passenger:
Be 15 years of age or older
Have full mobility
Have the ability to understand and communicate instructions
Be physically able and willing to operate the emergency equipment if necessary.

Infants are not allowed to be seated in Exit Rows or the rows immediately in front of or in back of an Exit Row (even if accompanied by a passenger 15 years of age). If you plan on booking an Emergency Exit and are concerned that you or those you are traveling with do not meet the criteria, contact the airline you are flying for further information.

How do I submit seat comments?
On every aircraft, there is a "Submit Comments" button under the amenity icons, to the right of the plane. After clicking, a feedback form for seat comments will appear on your screen. This system allows us to collect all the comments for individual planes in one database.

Can you change my seat?
No, SeatGuru.com has no affiliation with either the airlines, their reservation systems, or any travel agency. You should attempt to contact either your travel agent or the airline you are flying to inquire about seat changes.

We aggregate, verify, and incorporate submitted feedback and comments into the site daily.

Is there a version of the site I can access from my Blackberry or PDA?

Can you answer my questions about traveling with a pet?
Yes, look for the "Pets" tab at the top of the General Information page for the airline you are flying. Each airline has a General Information page that can be reached from the left hand menu. Almost all airlines require you make advance reservations for your animal's travel; make sure you contact the airline directly.

Do you have information on designated handicap seating and seat belt extenders?
No, we recommend that you contact the airline you are flying with your questions and concerns.
